What is a Yoni Egg?

What is a Yoni Egg?

The word ‘yoni’ is Sanskrit can be translated to mean ‘the womb’, ‘the divine passage’ or the ‘source of life’. Today, it is also used to refer to the vagina and vulva. A yoni egg is a small, smooth crystal egg (sometimes known as a ‘jade egg’) that is inserted into the vagina for anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to harness certain physical and spiritual healing properties. Yoni eggs can be made from various types of crystal, such as rose quartz, green aventurine and black obsidian, all with different properties. Checkout our blog on how to choose a yoni egg for more information.

How do yoni eggs work?

Yoni eggs are believed to work on both a physical and energetic level.

Physically, they are designed to help train and tone the pelvic floor by creating tension with the vaginal muscles when inserted (especially when used in conjunction with Kegel exercises). A stronger pelvic floor can help to reduce urinary incontinence or light bladder leakage, help you have more intense orgasms and enhanced sexual pleasure, and can help to prevent or treat uterine prolapse. See our guide on how to use a yoni egg.

Spiritually and energetically, crystal yoni eggs are believed to help with releasing emotional or sexual trauma stored in the womb or vagina, and help you reconnect with your sexual and feminine energy. Different crystals are said to have different healing properties for the womb, so choose a stone that resonates with the intention behind your yoni egg practice. If you have experienced sexual trauma and are struggling, it's always best to pair your yoni egg practice with counselling or other assistance from a professional or someone you trust.

How do I know which yoni egg to choose?

There are three things to consider when choosing a yoni egg: the type of stone, size and whether you prefer a drilled yoni egg (which can be used with a string for easier removal) or an undrilled yoni egg with no string. They can be purchased individually, or in a set of three. See our in-depth guide for how to choose a yoni egg for more information!

Are yoni eggs safe?

As long as you keep your yoni egg clean, store it securely and inspect it before each use for any cracks or damage, it is safe to use. As yoni eggs are made from stone that can be chipped or broken, you should always look closely for any surface damage on your yoni egg before use. Yoni eggs should be completely smooth with no jagged edges (ouch!) or areas where bacteria may be trapped. If using a drilled yoni egg, you should thread it with a natural, unscented and unflavoured dental floss that can be disposed of after use. We also recommend using your yoni egg with a drop of personal lubricant to have a safer, more comfortable experience.

I’m not sure about using a yoni egg, but I still want to strengthen my pelvic floor. What other options are there?

If crystal yoni eggs are not your thing, there are some other ways you can enhance your pelvic floor strengthening routine. Kegel trainers fall into two main categories being weighted devices and electronic pelvic floor trainers. See our blog on A Guide to Choosing Kegel Trainers and Exercisers for more details.

You can of course do Kegel exercises to tone the pelvic floor without a yoni egg, kegel ball or other device. However, these tools are a great way to take your strengthening routine to the next level - kind of like adding weights at the gym! And of course, using a crystal yoni egg can be a wonderful way to connect to and enhance your sexual and feminine energy.
